چکیده
Molecular Characterization of Intestinal Bacteria in Healthy Cats and a Comparison of the Fecal Bacterial Flora between Healthy Cats and Cats with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). (August 2008) Lauren Elizabeth Ritchie, B.S., Texas A&M University Co-Chairs of Advisory Committee: Dr. Jan S. Suchodolski Dr. Jörg M. Steiner Past studies characterizing the feline intestinal microflora have used traditional bacterial culture techniques. However, in recent years it has been recognized that the majority of intestinal bacteria are non cultivable. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe the microflora along the intestinal tract in healthy cats using comparative 16S ribosomal DNA (16S rDNA) analysis. Intestinal content from the stomach, duodenum, jejunum, ileum, and colon was collected from 4 healthy cats and one specific pathogen free cat (SPF) and the bacterial composition was identified by direct sequencing of bacterial 16S rDNA amplicons. A predominant anaerobic microflora was observed in all evaluated segments of the intestine. Fourteen different bacterial orders were identified with the majority of all sequences classified in the class Clostridiales. Six different Clostridium clusters were identified with the majority of sequences affiliated with Clostridium cluster I. Comparative 16S rDNA analysis was also used to evaluate differences in the fecal microflora between healthy cats (n=6), cats with histopathologically confirmed inflammatory bowel disease (IBD; n=6), and cats with

Chronic Diarrhea in Cats
Feline inflammatory bowel disease Feline inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is the term applied to a group of poorly understood intestinal disorders that are associated with vomiting, diarrhea and weight loss in cats. Diagnosis is usually based upon subjective analysis of intestinal mucosal biopsies and qualified according to the dominant mucosal infiltrate, typically lymphocytes and plasma cells...
متن کاملCats with Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Intestinal Small Cell Lymphoma Have Low Serum Concentrations of 25‐Hydroxyvitamin D
BACKGROUND Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and intestinal small cell lymphoma (ISCL) are common diseases in cats. The prevalence of alterations in the serum concentrations of fat soluble vitamins, such as vitamin D, in cats with IBD and ISCL is unknown. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES The objective of this study was to measure serum 25 hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) concentrations in cats with IBD or ISCL...
متن کاملCampylobacter Species and Neutrophilic Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Cats
BACKGROUND Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a common cause of signs of gastrointestinal disease in cats. A subset of cats with IBD has neutrophilic inflammation of the intestinal mucosa. HYPOTHESIS Neutrophilic enteritis in cats is associated with mucosal invasion by microorganisms, and specifically Campylobacter spp. ANIMALS Seven cats with neutrophilic IBD and 8 cats with lymphoplasmac...
متن کاملMolecular Detection of Chlamydia felis in Cats in Ahvaz, Iran
Chlamydiae are obligate generally Gram-negative intracellular parasites with bacterial characteristics, including a cell wall, DNA, and RNA. They have a worldwide distribution in different animal species. Chlamydia felis (C. felis) is an important agent with zoonotic susceptibility often isolated from cats with chronic conjunctivitis. The aim of the present survey aimed ...
متن کاملMeasurement of IL‐12 (p40, p35), IL‐23p19, and IFN‐γ mRNA in Duodenal Biopsies of Cats with Inflammatory Enteropathy
BACKGROUND Dietary hypersensitivity and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are important causes of chronic vomiting and diarrhea in cats. IL-23 has been recently found to be a key factor in the immunopathogenesis of IBD in humans but the involvement in IBD has not been investigated in cats. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES Expression of genes encoding Il-12p35 and p40, IL-23p19, and IFN-γ may be up-regula...
